Facial Biometric Search

Security and privacy are a very important aspect of any business. Every business owner wants their premises as safe and secure as possible without any unwanted visitors roaming around the premises. Every government security agency is using facial recognition software to track down criminals and outlaws. Facial Recognition Technology has been widely used for different purposes and it’s about time people come to know more about this wizardry.

Facial Biometrics is a technology capable of identifying a person by scanning and reading certain facial features. Facial Recognition Technology has come a long way and now have various applications in mobile platforms, robotics and even matter of national security.

Different Techniques Used for Facial Recognition

Traditionally there are two different ways which are used for facial recognition.

1. These algorithms identify the faces by first extracting the facial features from an image of the subject’s face. In this method, the algorithm analyzes the facial features like relative position, size, the shape of nose, ears, cheeks, lips etc.

2. The other way is to use a compressed probe image which contains all the necessary data to recognize the face of a certain person. The probe image is compared to the available face data to recognize the required face out of the data pool.

3D Recognition

In 3-dimensional face recognition, 3D sensors are used to record the facial features with more details like the structure of the shape, spots, contour of the eye socket, chin, nose etc. The additional advantage of 3D face recognition is that it is not dependent on the light like the other methods.

In this method, the facial features can be scanned in different lighting and a wide range of viewing angles. This method drastically increases the precision in the process making it more reliable and usable in different conditions.

There are some other ways used for facial recognition like:

Skin Texture Analysis

Thermal Cameras

Combination of different techniques (3D Face Recognition + Skin Texture Analysis)

Applications of Face Biometrics

Mobile Applications

There are many mobile apps which use face recognition for different purposes. Snapchat uses facial recognition to add a new filter which can change the way you look. Similarly, there are many such mobile apps which utilize this technique to improve their services.

Face ID

Unlocking your phone with your face is nothing new but Apple has completely changed the game with their precise Face ID feature.

Security Services

Various Police and National Security Agencies around the world use facial recognition systems to track down criminals and identify suspects.

Biometric Attendance

In big companies and government agencies, various biometric machines and cameras are used to automatically mark the presence of employees or any certain individual.

Evolution of CCTV in India

Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) camera is widely used in modern times for surveillance. It is used in all countries for security. India is no exception! You may come across CCTV cameras in India in day-to-day life. Besides, its use is increasing. You may find a great future for CCTV in India. CCTVs are here to stay!

CCTV was first designed by the German scientist Walter Brunch in 1942. It was used to monitor the launch of rockets. It, later on, became a part of every rocket launch program. It was used to monitor any technical defects taking place during the launch. United Kingdom (UK) began using the system to monitor public places for crime prevention in 1960s. United States (US) started using the system for crime prevention in public buildings. The use of CCTVs quickly spread to other countries. Largest number of CCTV cameras exists in Europe today. The European Government spends almost two-third of its crime prevention budget in CCTV cameras and Digital Video Recorders (DVRs).

Indian story with regards to CCTV is a bit different. It has not been long since the utilization of CCTV in India gained momentum. Inspiration to use CCTV cameras in India has been derived from other countries. After the attacks on twin tower, the growth of CCTV increased considerably in US. Large-scale use of CCTV in India is mere copying of the measures adopted by other countries to fight terrorism. Despite being the center of focus of jihad based terrorism, market has remained slow to accept CCTV cameras in India, as compared to other countries. The outlook is changing at a fast pace, though!

Back in 2002, CCTV cameras in India were found in schools, kindergartens, supermarkets, and retail stores. Retail stores and supermarkets required them the most to prevent shoplifting. Schools and kindergartens use the system to monitor the activities of children, to prevent bullying, and to prevent juvenile crime. In 2004, a report was published in a leading newspaper; the Delhi police urged the banks in the city to install CCTV to combat bank robbery. By then, CCTV in some Indian Police stations was also set to monitor the activities of Police officers. CCTV in Indian bus depots and railway stations was installed as well to detect pick-pocketing. Airports started using CCTV surveillance since 2002.

Information Technology Act, passed in 2008, has given immense power to the Government in matters of surveillance. Government can monitor any premise, even if it is a blow to privacy, to protect the interests of the common public. CCTV in India will gradually make its way into roads, civic bodies, and other public places. Installation of CCTV cameras in Indian public places may reduce crime and anti-social behavior. Scope for CCTV security cameras in India is huge in the near future!

Outlook towards CCTV in India has changed considerably! Today, the use of CCTV cameras in India is not restricted to highly sensitive areas. Offices, restaurants, and other places of day-to-day life install CCTV Security cameras to monitor the activities going on in the premise. CCTV in India has become a major tool for security.

A Brief Guide to Easy CCTV Installation

Closed-circuit television, aka CCTV, is a camera-based surveillance system used for security purposes and to monitor property, buildings, land or public areas such as parks and council buildings. A CCTV system is basically a system of cameras, wireless or wired, which transmit recordings via signals (or, in the case of wireless CCTV cameras via an internet connection) to monitors on which such recordings can be viewed either as still images or moving video. There are various different systems of CCTV available to purchase and install all of which offer different features and need to be used in different ways, so because of this wherever possible professional CCTV installation is recommended.

There are some cases, however, when professional CCTV installation isn’t possible, either you haven’t got the budget for it or your particular system doesn’t require such extensive installation procedures. There is often a different way to install different CCTV systems such as indoor systems and outdoor ones, and the systems that are designed for use outdoors really aren’t recommended to be placed and installed indoors.

Wireless Installation

If your CCTV system is wireless, more often than not you can simply place the individual cameras in the spots where you need them to be and switch them on. To ensure that you are able to view the wireless recordings of your system, you will need a dedicated connection over which the cameras can run. Sharing a connection with other internet-reliant devices is too risky, particularly if you need the 24 hour surveillance that wireless cameras can offer.

DIY Installation

If you aren’t able to access professional installation services for your CCTV camera system, it is still possible to install them yourself, however you do need to be aware of the type of system that you have because different systems have different installation procedures. Choosing the right spot to install your CCTV is crucial, too high and you may not get high quality images and recordings and too low and your cameras may not work effectively. You also need to secure your cameras in place with the correct fixtures and fittings, which should be supplied with your cameras system. If your CCTV system is wired you will need to drill holes to feed the wire through to your monitor.

Ensuring your Cameras are Secure

Installing your cameras or surveillance system properly doesn’t just involve placing the cameras in the right spot, it also requires some thought into how you will keep the cameras themselves secure and free to monitor your property and its surrounding gardens or land. Even though you need to place your cameras in a spot that offers maximum surveillance, you do need to ensure that they aren’t placed in too obvious a spot. This will only invite burglars and trespassers into tampering with them or even stealing them. If your camera system is a wired one, ensure that any wires running from it are secured properly so that they can’t be cut.

Testing your system out, even if your system is a basic motion sensor one, is absolutely vital to ensuring that it is both properly installed and that it can be relied upon when you need. Obviously you should test the system when you first installed it, and make sure that any connected alarms or other surveillance methods work properly and in conjunction with it. Testing is not just necessary on initial installation though, it also needs to be done regularly throughout the time that you will be using the system so that you know it is running properly and monitoring what it needs to monitor.

10 Tips on Shopping for CCTV Cameras

10 Tips on Shopping for CCTV Cameras

If you are in the market for a CCTV package for your home or SME, you are definitely making the right choice. CCTV cameras offer security and peace of mind. When burglars or miscreants target homes or businesses, CCTV video footage can help identify the crime and criminals instantly. Surveillance studies conducted in cities, especially crime prone regions, suggest that installing CCTV cameras act as a crime deterrent, and media reports suggest a marked decrease in the number of crime cases reported from areas where CCTV cameras are operational.

Once you have made the decision to purchase and install CCTV cameras, the next step is shopping for the best fit. With so many options available, how do you decide what works best for you? Price can be one deciding factor. Many websites offer new economical CCTV camera packages, starting as low as USD $599. With price points for every budget, buying a CCTV package does not need to be an expensive ordeal. A first time buyer will encounter countless options: What kind of camera resolution or viewing resolution is best? What are the best viewing frame rates? Do I need night vision? How much video recording capacity and video storage capacity will I require?

In this article, we break down these terms for you and help you decide the best CCTV package for your needs:

1. CCTV camera resolution

Most tech savvy users wield phone cameras and video camcorders and discuss megapixels and camera resolutions like a pro. However, when researching CCTV camera packages, you may come across the term TVL or TV lines. What are these? Well, most CCTV cameras operate on the analog camera or analog television system. Therefore, instead of pixels, we talk in terms of TV lines. We understand that higher the pixels, better the image quality we receive. Similarly, the more the TV lines (subject to size of lens, light, and so on), you will receive better picture quality on your CCTV camera. For most home and business security purposes, camera resolutions may range from 420 to 700 TV lines. In fact, 700 TV lines is the maximum you may find. Once you enter the digital CCTV field, you may find pricier options with much higher resolution cameras.

2. Internet viewing resolution

Internet viewing resolution uses CIF (Common Intermediate Format) as a measurement unit. It defines a video sequence with a resolution such as 352 X 288 that maybe converted for viewing in PAL or NTSC formats. Confused? Let us try that again. Your camera captures an image at a certain rate called frames per second. The CIF resolution refers to how your DVR records this image or sequence of images. In a nascent hard drive or hard disk industry, storage was expensive. Naturally, people preferred to compromise and capture low-resolution images by sacrificing 4 CIF and maximum frame rate. With video storage turning cost efficient, you can now capture images on 4 CIF and get maximum detail. As the name suggests, 4CIF offers almost 4 times the size of the image and is especially beneficial in places such as front desks, doorways, bank operations, and so on, for facial recognition and clarity in images. In other areas, where you prefer fluid action and no lapse in capture of movements, you may resort to CIF while recording.

3. Internet viewing frame rate

We talked about frame rate (frames per second) in terms of captured video footage and its quality. The concept remains the same no matter what kind of video capturing device you may use. The device actually captures snapshots and replays them back in quick succession making it look like a fluid movement or action. Generally, in CCTV camera package terms, anything above 30 fps would provide a smooth footage without any jerks. Many places now offer exceptional deals on even 120 fps CCTV camera packages making it as ‘real time’ as it can get.

4. All weather CCTV cameras

While shopping for a CCTV package, you may want to consider the placement of cameras. Depending on if you want cameras mounted outdoors or indoors, you may choose from a wide variety of waterproof cameras. Waterproof cameras are better able to withstand damage caused due to rain, snow, and humidity. Some weatherproof cameras may come with a sealed glass enclosure to protect it from environmental damages. Another advantage of sealed weatherproof cameras includes protection from dirt or dust, floating debris, and humidity, even in enclosed spaces such as large warehouses, storage facilities, and inside factories, auto repair shops, and so on.

5. Day and night recording

Whether you are considering an investment in CCTV cameras for your home or business, you may want to look at cameras that offer night vision and 24-hour day and night recording. Break-ins, thefts, and vandalizing property happen often in the nighttime, and poor visibility is the number one reason criminals go free. Night vision and infrared cameras capture quality image despite dark surroundings. They provide better definition of objects, people, or animals, and make recognition and identification easy. Area of focus, angle of installation, lens size, and pan tilt zoom (PTZ) features may determine the efficiency of night vision CCTV cameras. Installation of infrared cameras may also require set up at night using infrared lighting or simulate nighttime conditions. If you are considering 24/7 recording, it is also important to look at DVRs with max storage and back up accordingly.

6. Online viewing

Many security and surveillance companies offer client-centric features that go beyond installation and maintenance. One such feature includes registering a domain name with your security company and having them set up a personalized website to view your property anytime anywhere through a PC, tablet, or your web-enabled cell phone. Just type in your specific URL, and you will be linked to your CCTV protected property, home or business instantly and in real time. This is especially great if you want to keep an eye on your business while you travel or watch out for your children, pets, or even the elderly while you are at work.

7. Tracking via smart phones

With smart phones stepping up to meet the personal computer challenge, it is not surprising that security companies now offer wireless tracking through your web-enabled smart phones. Creating a domain name with a specific URL allows you to personalize the security viewing system on your smart phone. You do not have to download any external apps or software for this purpose. The security system companies selling you these CCTV packages may offer these features for a nominal price.

8. Video compression

An important aspect of CCTV installation includes compressing large video data into a format that can be easily stored or transmitted. Compressed data needs to undergo through the reverse process for viewing. Standardizing this process allows various different devices to inter operate with each other efficiently. In the CCTV industry, the gold standard is H.264 compression used by various different HD and Blu-Ray disc players, streaming video formats, and other Internet applications. CCTV cameras using H.264 video compression ensures the absolute best quality of video footage transmission.

9. Alert systems: Message or email, motion detection

CCTV cameras allow you to capture images as they happen or an additional feature called motion detection maybe added or purchased with your CCTV cameras. In the latter case, only movement in front of the camera prompts image capture and recording. Motion detection comes handy if you prefer to use less disk space for recording. In a designated quiet area, sudden movements maybe recorded making it easy to store minimum data and review it later. Many motion detector cameras maybe pre installed with an alarm or sound system that maybe triggered by movement. Some surveillance companies may also provide an email alert system that warns you of intrusion or movement in a monitored area.

10. Recording and storing

Any CCTV package is incomplete without a reliable DVR system that can record and store your data for future reference. Online recording and viewing allows you to look at your monitored area on a specially designated domain. Remote monitoring is possible on your computer as well as your smart phone. Offline recording and storing requires hard disk space, which can maybe purchased according to your needs. Some hard disks range from 500 GB all the way to 2 TB and may allow you to store your video data for up to 12 months.

CCTV Camera Installation Guide

CCTV Camera Installation Guide

CCTV camera systems can be difficult to install, so this guide will provide detailed instructions on how to properly install a CCTV camera system. Prior to installation, it is important to decide the location where you would like the cameras. It is important to pick a location central to the DVR system, since all the cameras will be wired into the DVR. Cameras can be installed both indoors and outdoors. Also, it is important to decide if an internet connection is required for installation. This will allow the user to be able to view the cameras directly on their smart phone.

CCTV cameras offered in many security stores include indoor and outdoor wired cameras that can be manually installed. The first step when installing CCTV cameras is to decide whether to use premade BNC cables or cables that you need to cut yourself. The premade video cables are the easiest to use and have two male video connectors. One end of the cable connects to the DVR, while the other end connects to the camera. If you are using the cables that need to be cut, you would just need to crimp each end.

The camera itself has two cables that are attached to the device. It has a female end as well as a male end. The female end is used for the video cable and the male end uses the power cable. The male end of the camera connects to the female end of the power connection of the BNC cable. The female end of the camera hooks into the video male end of the BNC cable.

The BNC cable should now have two loose ends. It should have both a male end for the power and a male video connector. The male video cable connects to the back of the DVR to the video input, while the male power cable connects to the power supply. Different types of power supplies can be used for connecting the cameras such as a one channel power supply, 4 channel power supply, 8 channel power supply, and a 16 channel power supply. Each channel supports one camera so a 4 channel power supply can support up to 4 cameras. However, it is sometimes recommended to purchase individual power supplies for each camera. This results in a more reliable system with less interference and outages. CCTV cameras aren’t too difficult to setup, but most sellers also offer professional installation as well.

Getting the Security You Need For Your Business Or Home

Getting the Security You Need For Your Business Or Home

A security camera can be a very effective way to keep your home or business safe. They can sometimes be a bit expensive, but the investment can also have a large pay off if you avoid theft. Take the time to shop around and find the right brand for your needs and budget.

Many security experts will give you their opinion on what the best brands and models available are, and where you can get them. You should decide what you’d like, such as a large camera to be a visible deterrent, or a small hidden camera to catch possible foul play?

Would you rather have a wired camera or go wireless? Once you have chosen and purchased the camera you want, it’s important to properly install it. Be sure to save any manuals, booklets and extra parts that come with it. Saving parts can keep you from having to replace them down the line. And keeping manuals can help you avoid costly service charges by installing or fixing the camera by yourself.

Follow the instruction manual very carefully. Each brand and model will have its own installation process. And you will have different directions for wired and wireless cameras. Wired cameras often involve more complex work, including rewiring, and you may need to seek professional help from an electrician.

Wireless cameras are a bit easier, but still require proper installation so that all pieces are communicating with one another and working properly. Installation differs from brand to brand, but there are a few standards to keep in mind.

The camera should have as wide of a scope as possible, covering the most area that it can. However, if it is too wide this can sometimes leave a blind spot for people to hide in undetected. Placing a camera in a corner is usually a good bet.
